Ahead of arguably Manchester United's most important game of the 2020/21 season so far, agent Mino Raiola chose to drop a bombshell about Paul Pogba's future at the club.

Raiola, who is the Frenchman's agent, has suggested that Pogba's time at United is coming to an end, with these comments coming in an interview with Italian publication Tuttosport on Tuesday.

'I can say that it's over for Paul Pogba at Manchester United,' Raiola said.

'It is useless to go around it, better to speak clearly, look ahead and not waste time looking for culprits.

'Paul at Manchester United is unhappy, he is no longer able to express himself as he would like and as expected of him. Local ip config.

'He has to change teams, he has to change the air. It has a contract that will expire in a year and a half, in the summer of 2022, but I think the best solution for the parties is to sell it to the next market.'

With pundits and fans alike now calling for Pogba to leave in the January transfer window, how would United perform in the second-half of the season?

And, what if United were able to sign Aston Villa playmaker Jack Grealish to replace the outgoing World Cup winner?

To find out, and have a bit of fun, we used Football Manager 2021 to simulate the future and see what could happen.

We 'sold' Paul Pogba and 'signed' Jack Grealish for Man United in January

To set up this simulation, we used the Football Manager 2021 editor to arrange for United midfielder Pogba to join Juventus, and Villa midfielder Grealish to join United in the January 2021 transfer window, using the newly-released FM21 to run our simulation.

The Football Manager database currently contains data on more than 800,000 individuals and 45,000 active clubs, with data sourced from their international on the ground scouting network which numbers roughly 1,000 people, among their ranks are some who are involved in football in professional capacities, including scouts and coaches.

Data accuracy is further ensured by input from contributors who are active within the professional game (players, agents etc.) who provide regular feedback.

With Pogba moving to his former club Juventus on January 1 2021, Grealish moved to Old Trafford on the same day, here is how the two players' profiles compare on FM21.

We then simulated the entire 2020/21 season on the game, to see what kind of impact Pogba's depature, and Grealish's arrival, had on United in the second-half of the 2020/21 campaign.

This is what happened.

Grealish became a first team regular at Old Trafford on his arrival in our simulation, but as expected the midfielder wasn't a direct replacement for Pogba, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer mostly using the England international on the left of midfield.

Grealish made 27 appearances for United in the second-half of the 2020/21 season in our simulation, including 20 Premier League starts, with the midfielder scoring five goals and providing seven assists in all competitions.

In the Premier League, Grealish scored four goals and created four goals in 20 league starts, showcasing his goal scoring and creative skillset.

It was Grealish's creativity that really stood out in our simulated season, with the 25-year-old making 23 key passes, a pass which led directly to a goal scoring chance, in just 27 appearances, only slightly less than Marcus Rashford across a whole season.

Over the course of a full season, if we simply doubled these figures (46), only Bruno Fernandes would be more creative than Grealish.

Grealish was included in United's best performing eleven during the 2020/21 season, with the midfielder featuring on the left side of midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Fernandes featured in the number 10 position, with Greenwood on the right and a midfield two of McTominay and Donny van de Beek.

So, with how did United perform in all competitions in our simulated season?

Here is how the final 2020/21 PL table looked once our simulation finished at the end of May.

With Pogba shipped out and Grealish brought in, United achieved a top four finish in the league, earning 73 points, just one less than third placed Tottenham, five points less than 2nd place Chelsea and 11 points behind champions Liverpool.

In the real-life 2019/20 campaign, United earned 66 league points, so Grealish's arrival for half a season saw an increase of seven additional points won, but more importantly, United were much closer to the eventual league champions.

United weren't particularly successful in the cup competitions however, not reaching the latter stages in either the FA Cup or Champions League, but did reach the Carabao Cup semi-final.

So what of Pogba?

Pogba wasn't in great form for Serie A giants Juventus (called Zebre in FM21) in our simulation, making 33 appearances but only scoring four goals and assisting once, scoring and assisting fewer than Grealish despite making more appearances.

Football Manager 2021 predicts that although Grealish wouldn't be a direct replacement for Paul Pogba by any means, Grealish's arrival would ultimately improve United in the second-half of the season, whilst Pogba's departure didn't really have any impact, as Solskjaer's side finished just 11 points behind Liverpool in the league.

As always these simulations are just one way of predicting a player's prospective impact, but it's interesting to see how FM21 predicts the future could play out for Pogba and Grealish, should these players complete high-profile transfers in January 2021.
